Sometimes we’re so focused on who we want to be, that we forget how far we’ve come.

We all have goals of becoming the best versions of ourselves. We become so obsessed with our goals that we lose perspective. It’s frustrating when we’re not seeing any changes. We want to see the product of our hard work right NOW.

There were plenty of times during my first round of P90X (even now!) where I was frustrated with my progression or lack of. I was doing everything right, I trained hard, got plenty of sleep and ate really well. Even though I was doing everything right, I still wasn’t seeing any results. I became obsessed with what I wasn’t seeing and it became frustrating.

My obsession almost led to failure. There was a point where I considered quitting. I wanted to quit P90X, the new diet, pretty much everything I had accomplished to that point.

Sometimes we become so obsessed that we forget how much we’ve accomplished so far. We lose perspective and forget that we’re better today than we were a year ago, a month ago, or even just yesterday. If you find yourself becoming frustrated because you’re not seeing results, just remember to put everything into perspective. Take pride in what you’ve accomplished, whether you lost 20 pounds or 1 pound, you should be proud of what you’ve accomplished. Be confident and know that as long as you’re consistent with your training and disciplined with your diet, YOU WILL SEE RESULTS.

I had to take a step back and realize that my hard work would eventually pay off. To this day I still struggle with keeping everything in perspective. Remember, this new lifestyle is a marathon, not a sprint.

Remember those black chia seeds you used to slather all over your Chia Pet or Chia Head? Did you know that they’re edible???

I didn’t.

About a year ago, I took a trip to Houston to visit my parent’s. Sometime during my visit I noticed my mom was chugging this water bottle full of black seeds. Disgusted, I asked, “Mom, what the hell is that???” She went on to tell me about how it was really healthy and that I should drink it too. I assumed it was another one of her old Asian remedies and told her to buzz off.

Well, it turns out I shouldn’t have been so quick to dismiss my mom. She was right (she’s always right). Believe it or not, chia seeds are one of the most nutritious foods in the world!

Chia Seeds are rich in fiber, there are 5 grams in one tablespoon. If your goal is lose weight, the fiber rich chia seeds will help curb your appetite. Chia seeds are also rich in Omega 3 fatty acids which can help cut triglyceride levels, and reduce risk of death from heart disease. Looking to build muscle? Chia seeds are a good source for protein and calcium.

Chia seeds can be prepared in many ways. I simply dump mine in my morning shake or a glass of water. I’ve seen others dump it in their yogurt, or use it in place of butter when making bread or cake. You can also put some chia seeds in oatmeal. There are plenty of uses for chia seeds!

I’ve been eating Chia Seeds for the past 5 months and have noticed that it helps curb my appetite. My doctor has also noticed an improvement in my blood work since eating chia seeds.

If you’re looking for something nutritious to add to your diet give chia seeds a try. You can find them at your local super market or at a discounted price on Amazon.

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all doing well. I would like to apologize for the lack of check-ins. It’s been a while since I’ve checked-in and even longer since I’ve updated my blog. A lot has happened, both personally and within the world of Beachbody, since my last update and I’m sincerely sorry that I haven’t made more time to keep you in the loop.

Since my last update, I’ve moved to a new home, started a new job and have been on multiple trips (both personal and business). I hate the fact that I have these excuses because it sounds all too familiar, it’s similar to the “too busy to exercise” excuse. Even though these life events affected my blog activity, it didn’t affect my physical activity. I am proud to say that I still workout at least 4-6 times a week and I’m still in great shape. Here’s a photo of my back progress, it was taken a month ago.

I’ll post a full body photo in the next week. If you would like to see more photos you can follow me on Instagram, my name is “gbgrtek” for now, let’s move on to other updates.

The first is Body Beast! This program features award winning bodybuilder Sergei taking you through the same workouts that won him multiple bodybuilding awards. There is an incredible mix of exercises that will leave your muscles screaming for mercy. If you want bigger, stronger muscles, this workout was made for you. I committed to this when it first came out and I gotta say, it is an incredibly challenging workout. If you want to build size and strength, I can honestly say this works.

The second is the new Chocolate Shakeology formula. Not too long ago the folks behind Shakeology set out to do the impossible by making Shakeology even more nutritious than it already was. Impossible. Right?!? Not at all! They succeeded by adding even more nutritious ingredients and keeping the amazing taste. This is the most nutrient dense shake in the world, if you haven’t tried it yet, you can get your own bag here.

The last update I want to discuss is, Insanity: The Asylum Vol 2 is now available! I had the best results from The Asylum Volume 1, and I wasn’t the only one (click here for my brother’s transformation). Volume 2 is now available and I’m expecting even more successful stories!

Alright everyone, we’re into month 3 of a new year, stay focused and dedicated to reaching your goals!

Sam took his newfound knowledge, of a clean diet, consistent, intense training, and ran with it. He decided to create his own hybrid, it included at least 3 days of resistance training and Insanity:Asylum in between. Check out his latest video and updated pictures!

A month ago I decided to hold and take part in Insanity: The Asylum Challenge. It’s been about one week since I’ve gone through the whole program and I have to admit I am impressed. The Asylum is as advertised… It will get you RIPPED and in ATHLETIC shape in 30 days!

The Package

The first thing I noticed when I received my copy of Asylum was the unique packaging. It comes in a long rectangular box, different than the previous Insanity packaging. I really enjoy Beachbody’s attention to detail. Every workout program has its own packaging style, it reminds me of my high school/early college days when I collected Michael Jordan’s shoes. Every one of his shoes had a different box. In fact, I’ve kept all of the boxes I’ve “collected” in my closet (P90X, P90X2, Insanity, Insanity: The Asylum).

I’m sorry I had to rant about my love for boxes… BUT here’s what’s inside the box.

6 Workout DVD’s – 8 workouts and an Athletic Performance Assessment DVD

Shaun T’s 14-Day “Get Shredded Diet”

Asylum Guide – This breaks down how to maximize The Asylum and get the best results

Asylum Workout Calendar – A 30 day breakdown of your workout plan

Agility Ladder – This is the ladder you’ll use in most of the DVD’s

Speed Rope

Strength Bands – These are special bonuses, which you only get when you order through me.

The Workouts

DVD 1 – Athletic Performance Assessment: Right off the bat Shaun T has you do drills to assess your current athletic abilities. Even though, it’s not one of the main workouts, this is actually a good total body workout on its own.

DVD 2 – Speed and Agility: This is definitely one of my favorite workouts; in fact, I plan on incorporating it into my next hybrid. In this workout, you’ll be incorporating the agility ladder in all of your workouts. This is a tough workout; you really have to focus on your feet/hand eye coordination, while doing the exercises as fast as you can. If you’re not tired after this workout, you’re not pushing yourself hard enough.

DVD 3 – Vertical Plyo: Another tough workout (get used to me saying this), 1 minute into the workout and you’ll be feeling the burn in your legs! I hate the burn! The burn really tests my mental toughness. I enjoy a good workout, but the burn really messes with my focus. This workout also incorporates the agility ladder as well as the speed rope.

DVD 4 – Strength and Strength with Bands: You’ll find two workouts in this DVD. Both workouts are the same except one is focused on free weights (or body weight if you don’t have any free weights), and the other is focused on doing exercises with the bands. The workout is tough with/without weights or bands. This is another workout that I’ll be incorporating into my next hybrid. Shaun T offers a lot of customization in this workout, for example, if you don’t have pull up bar, you’ll do a challenging set of pushups (different variations).
PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION: If you’re going to do The Asylum, I personally recommend that you do it with a pull up bar. The pull up exercises are TOUGH! There is one exercise in particular that I still struggle with, The Rock Climber exerciser. This exercise requires you to switch hand positions while doing pull ups!

DVD 5 – Back to Core and Recovery: Another DVD with two workouts. The first workout, Back to Core, focuses on your lower back. I had no idea how week my lower back was till I did this workout. The swimmer exercises will give you a burn! The lower back is something a lot of people neglect. I’m a huge proponent of lower back exercises (helps prevent lower back pain and improve posture) so this workout will also be included in my new hybrid. The second workout is Recovery. This is a relaxing DVD and one that I usually do after Back to Core, even though I’m not required to do it after. There are a lot of stretches in here, the goal is to get the blood flowing in your muscles and speed up recovery time.

DVD 6 – Gameday and Overtime: The toughest workouts in the program! Gameday puts all the workouts (Speed and Agility, Vertical Plyo, Strength, Back to Core) together! You are tested on everything you did in previous workouts. This workout is also the longest! This is 60 minutes of torture compared to the 40 – 45 minutes. You go through a series of sports specific exercises with minimal rest. This workout is serious and it’s another one that I’ll be including in my next hybrid.Just when you thought it was over, Shaun T gives you Overtime. On its own, Overtime is tough! After the Gameday workout, Overtime is a nightmare! I had a hard time with this one, and I’m always hesitant to play it. This is a fifteen minute bonus workout that will test you!

Equipment: What you’ll need for The Asylum

Necessities: Agility Ladder

Optional: Pull Up Bar, Strength Bands, Speed Rope and Weights

Recommendation: If you want to maximize your results, you’re going to need all of the above. (Click Here for the Deluxe Package)

Insanity vs. Insanity: Asylum

Insanity: The Asylum picks up right where Insanity left off. There is no beginner’s phase, you are thrown into the workouts right from the start. If you haven’t done Insanity or if you aren’t in decent shape, I’d recommend you start with Insanity or P90X first. All the workouts have minimal rest and it’s a struggle keeping up with everyone in the DVD’s.

Results/Conclusion

I have to admit during the holiday season I wasn’t as strict with my diet and I didn’t work out as much as I should have. As a result, I gained a few pounds, lost a little bit of muscle and looked soft. Going into The Asylum, I decided to turn it up and stay committed to my Vegan Cleanse, drink Shakeology, and follow The Asylum Workout Calendar.

What’s the verdict? Insanity: The Asylum works! Here are my before/after pictures. A very special thank you to my photographer (my girlfriend). Unfortunately for her, she had to take multiple pictures of me. Lol.

If you want further proof that Asylum works, check out my brother’s results by clicking here.

Like the first Insanity, The Asylum is a cardio based workout but with a sports twist. You’ll be doing a lot of exercises that includes a jump rope and the agility ladder. The workouts are fun but challenging! There are a lot of resistance exercise mixed into the program that are tough!

If you’re looking for a fun and challenging workout that gives you results in 30 days, I’d recommend this workout. If you love sports and sports based workouts, this workout is for you. It will get you ripped in no time. If you’re focused on building muscle, I would recommend P90X or P90X2.

Next Up… Hybrid

Insanity: The Asylum has reignited my commitment to working out and being healthy. I was eating well before but now I’m more motivated. For the next 12-14 weeks I will be doing a P90X, P90X2, and Asylum Hybrid. This is possibly, the hardest hybrid I’ve put together, combining the best of every program. I’ll be posting this hybrid schedule, my diet, and my theory behind the hybrid soon. Keep visiting for updates!

How Do I Really Know If Shakeology Is Worth the Money When Everything Else Costs Less?

I love breakfast. I love it because it’s the most important meal of my day. Studies indicate that having breakfast in the morning boosts your metabolism and helps your mind and body operate more efficiently throughout the day. I also love breakfast because it’s when I have the healthiest meal of the day, Shakeology. (Click here to learn how Shakeology’s ingredients can fight cancer/disease)

It’s been a year since my first glass of Shakeology and I’m still convinced that this is one of the reasons why I’m still in great shape. I’m a huge supporter of Shakeology, and I truly believe in its benefits. Every day, I tell friends and family about Shakeology and how they would benefit it. Unfortunately, one of the biggest reasons why they aren’t willing to give it a try is its price tag.

At about $120 ($130 for the new vegan flavor), a bag of Shakeology may seem like a big expense. Here’s the thing, each bag has 30 servings, so you’re paying $3 for each meal. Now compare that to the $4-$10 you may spend on coffee, lunch, or snacks everyday! In the end you’re saving about $1-$7 a meal, a savings of $30 to $210 a month! This is a great investment, one that will save you money and improve your health!

Naturally, the next question I get is, “Why should I spend this much money on Shakeology when there are cheaper replacement meals/shakes out there?” I wanted to share an article that addresses this question:

There are many protein shakes and meal replacements that are less expensive than Shakeology. But comparisons based on the simple “protein shake” or even “health shake” are usually off the mark and don’t stack up to Shakeology.

Shakeology was designed for people who want more than protein, and for people who want the health benefits being represented by the ingredients on the label. To really know whether a product measures up to Shakeology, you need to keep some things in mind:

How much is enough?

We are proud of Shakeology’s 70+ ingredients. Other shakes will trumpet the number of ingredients they have too. But are the ingredients they are counting actually good for you? Are there any artificial flavors or colors listed in those ingredients? Not in Shakeology!

Are they derived from whole-food sources? They are in Shakeology! Too often the “magic ingredient” has been isolated from the enzymes and phytonutrients that actually make the ingredient useful when consumed.

And does the competition formulate for the synergistic benefits between the ingredients, or just slap together whatever is hot in the media? Shakeology was specially formulated for the collection of ingredients to work together like a symphony; this combination is so effective, some people report dramatic benefits within the first week. Other supplements point to one or two individual ingredients and build a “story” around their superfood attributes.

Protein

Pay attention to a product’s protein source or blend. Protein sources like whey protein hydrolysate have been shown to trigger a much higher insulin response in the body. That’s not an outcome we would tolerate in Shakeology.

Our protein source is whey protein isolate, which is more than 90 percent pure protein. Plus, Shakeology is loaded with digestive enzymes and lactase—that’s the enzyme that breaks down lactose and is found in over-the-counter products like Lactaid®. Don’t confuse whey protein concentrate with isolate. Whey protein concentrate is the least pure form of whey protein made. The benefit of isolate versus concentrate is that the fat has been removed to achieve isolate. The fat in whey protein is what carries toxins consumed by the animal. That’s the reason Shakeology can be used by so many people who are lactose-intolerant—because those toxins have been removed through the isolate process.

For our vegan formulation, we use sprouted brown rice protein, not soy. Does the competition use ANY soy in their formulation? Soy protein contains estrogen, mimicking compounds that can interfere with your hormones. On top of that, most of the soy in the marketplace is GMO (genetically modified). These are two important reasons why we don’t use soy in Shakeology.

Glycemic index tested . . .

In terms of sugar, many protein shakes contain 1 gram of sugar or less. This is because they are using artificial chemical sweeteners. (Check the label for sucralose, aspartame, or sugar alcohols.) Shakeology’s small amounts of sugar comes from natural sources and whole superfoods like coconut flower nectar and luo han guo, which are easily processed by the body and, in fact, have been tested and certified by an independent lab to have a low glycemic index of 24—that’s lower than most fruits! (An apple is 36, and an orange is 43.)

What’s not in the base, they may suggest you add later

Other shakes don’t cost as much as Shakeology at first glance, but they also don’t contain the full profile of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for some vitamins and minerals, or whole-food sources of antioxidants, phytonutrients, adaptogen herbs, prebiotics, probiotics, or digestive enzymes. We’ve seen competitors make you buy a separate vitamin pack for $150 per month! Once you add it up, this is hardly a “good deal,” and it’s usually hardly even a good product.

To achieve the benefits of Shakeology we’ve seen, competitors charge between $250 and $335 per month! $120 doesn’t seem expensive when you realize all of the benefits Shakeology delivers.

SUMMARY:

Formula: 70+ of the healthiest ingredients from whole-food sources from around the world VERSUS protein, fillers, artificial coloring, and isolated glamour ingredients
Winner: Shakeology

Protein Source: Shakeology’s pure whey protein isolate or plant-based sprouted brown rice protein VERSUS soy, hydrolyzed whey, and/or whey concentrate blend
Winner: Shakeology

Taste: Rich Chocolate, tangy Greenberry, or fruity Tropical Strawberry Shakeology VERSUS chemically-derived, artificially-flavored competition
Winner: Shakeology

Price: $120 for Shakeology VERSUS—Oops! It’s impossible to compare lesser formulations on price. But if you add in all the separate vitamins and flavoring agents the other companies ask you to buy to match the benefits and nutritional content of Shakeology, you would easily spend over $300 every month—that’s 2 and half times the cost of Shakeology!
Winner: Shakeology

But the best comparison is results. From weight loss, to reduction in cravings, to regularity, to healthier cholesterol levels, to increased energy levels, to an overall sense of well being . . . We give a bottom-of-the-bag guarantee on Shakeology because we KNOW people will be amazed by how they feel. Shakeology is the winner by a total knock out!

Sam is my older brother and has been an avid gym rat for most of his life. I remember when I was 9 or 10 years old, Sam was in high school, and he was obsessed with working out and looking good (for the ladies?). I remember watching him do countless push ups, calf raises on the stairs, and running up and down our stairs. He would run up and down the stairs so much that my mom would get mad and tell him to stop making so much noise… It probably didn’t help that Sam would be doing this at random times of the night. I also remember sharing a room with Sam and every morning he would wake up, do a certain number of push ups and sit ups before getting ready for school.

I always admired his dedication to exercise and physical health. Years have gone by, and presently Sam is just as active as his younger days. The problem is, he reached a plateau with his results and his diet consisted of regular weekend outings… Which usually included the consumption of liquid death. For the longest time I’ve been trying to get Sam to do P90X. He always seemed interested (or at least he was good at pretending to be) but he never did it. Well, after almost a year I finally talked him into doing another program. Sam joined my challenge group for Insanity: The Asylum.

It’s been 30 days since he started Insanity:The Asylum and he can finally see his abs (something he hasn’t seen in years)! Here is Sam’s experience in his own words, and when he says “my little sister” he’s referring to me (the joys of having an older brother):

To be honest, I went into the program not expecting to get much out of it. I only did it because my little sister kept going on and on about how good it is. This was the only way to shut him up and stop him from nagging me. Going into the program I didn’t take it seriously. I didn’t measure myself at all, the only thing I did was weigh myself.

Prior to starting the 30 day program, I weighed 172 pounds. I now weigh 164 pounds. I feel leaner and lost a little bit of muscle mass which is expected. Most importantly I feel great and my core is stronger. I notice the difference when I play sports and my friends notice it too. My body control has improved and I’ve gained a little bit of speed as well.

My diet was pretty simple. I actually didn’t really count how much calories I took in per day. What I did was cut alcohol out of my life for the past 30 days, I didn’t drink pop (soda), I started my day off with a Shakeology shake, limited the type of carbs I had in my meals, ate every 2 to 3 hours, and my smallest meal of the day was during dinner.

I actually went out and bought a camera today and will be measuring myself this time, as I start my 60 day and finally 90 day transformation. I am a believer in Shakeology and feel that it was the biggest contributor to my results.

Congratulations Sam! Welcome to the getBIGgetRIPPED family!

On February 27th I decided to take the Vegan Challenge. I cleansed my body by following a whole food plant based diet for 30 days. Here are my thoughts and results…

Before the diet started, I was concerned about my energy, or lack of, during workouts. It was a great surprise to learn that I actually had more energy during my workouts! Not only were my workouts just as efficient (if not more) on this diet, I also had more energy during the day! This was pleasantly surprising because I was working out in the morning and studying late at night (CPA exam), I had more energy with only 6 or less hours of sleep a night (“not having time” should never be an excuse). The high energy levels are most likely a result of the high amounts of complex carbs (brown rice, vegetables, etc.) I consumed.

I never felt hungry or the uncontrollable desire to eat meat. Although, there were plenty of times I missed biting into a big chunk of steak. Most of my protein came from vegan protein powders (mostly soy based), beans, quinoa and the new Vegan Shakeology.

During this cleanse, I lost about 5 pounds of fat. I started the challenge at 167 pounds and lost about 3-4% body fat! Let me add that I started Insanity: The Asylum a week to two weeks after I started the Vegan Cleanse. Before the diet, I figured with the massive amounts of cardio from Insanity, and decrease in protein from the diet, I would lose muscle. The opposite actually happened; I lost body fat and gained about 1-2 pounds in muscle! Stay tuned for pictures from my round of Insanity: The Asylum. In the meantime here is a preview!

.

It’s been two weeks since I’ve completed the cleanse and I gotta say there is one thing that I’ve noticed right away. During the cleanse, my body felt really “light,” and after the cleanse I feel heavy and bloated. The fiber rich foods I consumed helped clear my system and made me feel great inside and out. It’s strange, but since I started eating meat again, I can really feel it sit in my lower abdominal area. I never felt bloated during the vegan diet. It may sound strange but I miss the “clean and light” feeling I had during the cleanse.

Overall this was a great experience. Not once did I feel like I was starving or that I wanted to quit. I also appreciate the fact that this diet introduced me to many foods that I never heard of, or considered eating (Quinoa for example). I also learned about the power of food, and how it can save your life. I’m not a converted vegan (I love meat too much!) but in the future I can see myself doing this cleanse once every year. I think it’s important to cleanse our bodies of the toxins we consume daily and a vegan cleanse is a great way of doing that.

Every year some of the worlds gretest athletes gather for an amazing display of skill and athleticism in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. I still can’t get over some of the dunks from past contests. I remember as a teenager in high school, my jaw dropped when I watched Vince Carter dunk his way to a slam dunk title. I’ll never forget the first time I saw Michael Jordan’s dunk from the free throw line, or when I first saw Spud Webb dunk. At 5’7″ Spud Webb was the shortest player to ever win a dunk title. Spud Webb made me believe that if i trained hard enough I could do it to.

Unfortunately I never knew how to train like an athlete. Have you ever wanted to train like an athlete? With P90X2, you can train like an athlete! Check out this excerpt from Steve Edwards Blog: The Straight Dope. Steve Edwards was involved in following the training of athletes at the P3 Training Facility. Here he highlights how PAP (which is a huge part of P90X2) training is being used for athletes like Jeremy Evans, the 2012 Slam Dunk Champion.

Congratulations to P3 athlete Jeremy Evans who won the NBA slam dunk competition on All Star Weekend. In this video of Evans training at P3 you’ll see him doing a lot of the same movements we do in P90X2, including the exact same PAP movements (step-up convicts to split squats).

He began training at P3 immediately after being drafted, where Dr. Marcus Elliott and his staff have turned him into a dunking machine. Over 60% of his baskets have come via dunk, not counting this one:

When people use their athleticism to punch their meal ticket this is the kind of training they do. And it’s no coincidence Jeremy’s doing what’s more or less an X2 workout, since Elliott and P3 were integral in its design. If you want to improve your hops, or any aspect of your athleticism, P90X2’s a slam dunk.
This clip shows Evans’ winning dunks, with a guest appearance from fellow P3 athlete Gordon Hayward. Incidentally, after Blake Griffin won last year’s contest jumping over a car Evans went out and did it “just to see if I could.” He one-ups him this year by jumping over a seated Hayward, catching and dunking two balls in the process. Insane. Then he jumps over someone standing fully erect. Wow.

I remember the first time I was exposed to Shakeology. I read all the nutritional benefits and thought to myself, “This can’t be true. There are way too many benefits packed into a shake.” Shakeology eliminates toxins more efficiently while allowing for better absorption of the essential nutrients you need. A proprietary blend of digestive enzymes and prebiotics helps your body progressively eliminate the toxins that build up over time from eating today’s highly processed foods.

At the same time, whole-food ingredients deliver the essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals your body needs to curb cravings, allowing your body to shed stored fat while the more than 20 different antioxidants and phytonutrients help reduce free radical damage that can lead to heart disease, heart attacks, high blood pressure, and stroke.

Shakeology is incredible (click here for my review). I’ve been drinking this stuff for a little more than a year now and I can’t see myself going a day without it. A lot of good things have happened since I started drinking this shake, including but not limited to, an improved digestive system, stronger immune system (I haven’t been sick in over a year!), acne has disappeared (I use to have scalp acne), lower body fat, and increased energy. Everyone that I’ve introduced Shakeology to, also agree that this is great and they can’t get over how something so healthy can taste so good!

I wanted to show you an article that I read the other day. It’s about the man behind Shakeology, Darin Olien, and how he goes around the world looking for Shakeology ingredients. Every ingredient in Shakeology has a health benefit, and one of those benefits could be a possible cure for cancer. Click on the link below to read the article from the Discovery Channel:

2) Also, as always, remember that the way I benefit from being your coach is that I earn a commission from any Beachbody products that you purchase, as long as you buy them through my site, www.getBIGgetRIPPED.com, or by logging in to www.teambeachbody.com to do your shopping (If you buy from the plain Beachbody site I get no credit). It helps with the amount of time I spend answering all your questions and helping you out. Thank you! I really appreciate it!

Stay COMMITTED! End the trend of obesity! And inspire others to do the same!
